BEACONS (2025-2028) - Active
Sponsor: US Department of Energy via the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Sub-contract #777820)

The Boundary layer Exploration of Aerosols and Clouds ON Ships (BEACONS) project, supported by the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program, will deploy state-of-the-art technology aboard commercial ships to monitor clouds, aerosols, and other atmospheric phenomena. Led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), BEACONS aims to demonstrate the feasibility of collecting high-resolution atmospheric data from commercial vessels, offering unprecedented data sets to improve process-level understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions, enhance model accuracy, and advance satellite retrieval processes. As a grantee, the University of Notre Dame will deploy in-situ instrument to detect the weather conditions and remote sensing instruments to measure cloud base height, planetary boundary layer height, wind velocity, temperature and relative humidity profiles, liquid water path.
