FD70 is the seventh generation of Vaisala visibility and present weather detection (PWD) sensors, which covers the roles of visibility, disdrometer, weather and freezing rain sensors. FD70 has been proven to provide all-encompassing information on local fog conditions at high data rate and superior resolution that would suit fog-turbulence studies. This is particularly true when FD70 is used in conjunction with upgraded ‘Super Combo’ turbulence probes to be deployed for high frequency fog-turbulence studies. FD70 utilizes forward scatter and optical disdrometer technologies, achieving superior performance and encompasses unique particle type differentiation, permitting identification and separation of flying insects from precipitating particles. The data reporting of FD70 includes: drizzle, rain, snow, snow grains, ice crystals, ice pellets, freezing drizzle, freezing rain, snow pellets, hail, fog, freezing fog, mist and haze. It reports MOR (visibility). MOR is one of the most important variables for physicochemical and optical characterizations of fog.
